New FAA Drone Registration Requirement

Owners of small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) weighing between 0.55 and 55 pounds are required to register their drones via a new web-based system that went live recently. Registration will make enforcement of the current regulations easier and will also enable the FAA to investigate any drone-related incidents that may occur. In general, all drones must be registered within the following timelines: * If you operated your drone before December 21, 2015, you must register by February 19, 2016 * All other drones must be registered with the FAA prior to their first outdoor flight The launch of the new registration system is also a good reminder about information already published by the FAA: * The I Fly Safe card is a great quick-reference guide to review before flying * The Law enforcement reference card addresses some of the same information, but also demonstrates what your local law enforcement officials will likely refer to when investigating any drone-related complaints. Check out the registration FAQs for more information. Or take a look at knowbeforeyoufly.org.
